NG JOO NGAN became a cyclist by accident. It all happened when Ng was around 15 and Ng elder brother Ng Joo Pong asked him to challenge their neighbour in a cycling race. Ng accepted the challenge and race with him... but he loss. That loss had a profound effect on him. He felt bad at letting his brother down and decided to challenge the friend to another race a week later. In the meantime, he trained as though as he was going for a national cycling competition. `I used to wake up at 5am and train for two hours every day before going to school,' sayed Ng. second race, Ng beat the neighbour hands down. He felt euphoric. He also had an epiphany: with training and discipline comes victory. It was a lesson him with unforgettable. That first taste of victory set him on the path of becoming a cyclist. He used to follow his elder brother for cycling competitions. With no one to coach him, he learnt from his mistakes and from experienced riders. `I didn't think of what career I wanted or what to do with my life. My dream was to constantly challenge myself,' says Ng.Nineteen-seventy was a banner year for Ng. He also won the National Sports Council `Sportsman of The Year' award. After his return from the Asian Games, Ng slowly moved to coaching. He was asked to coach the KL Cycling Club and like cycling, it was something he learnt on the job on his own through hits and misses. `The first year I coached, we did not become overall champions. But from the year after that, for the next 15 years I was with them, we were champions every year,' he mention proudly. His impressive work with the club was getting him noticed and in 1977, while still coaching the club, he also became the national cycling coach. Over the years, he has trained such champions as M. Kumaresan, Tsen Siong Hong, Teoh Chen Hai, Cheng Chong Ming and Ali Hassan, to name a few. `All these years, my cyclists have won more than 53 gold medals at various events at international level. No matter how good a coach you are, if you do not win races, you are a flop,' he says. `He is a very dedicated coach, it is difficult to find a person of his calibre,' says Kumaresan. `He is disciplined and patient. He will be at the training grounds earlier than the cyclists. I learnt all about punctuality and discipline from him. I haven't seen anyone like him who is so passionate about coaching.' Ng's dedication to his sport was recognised by the sports fraternity, and in 2004, he was awarded the National Sports Council `Coach of the Year' award, a recognition some believe, was long overdue. The government recognised his contribution to cycling and has bestowed on him the KMN and AMN titles.
Datuk Ng Joo Ngan was born on the 21st August 1947, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

He is considered the most successful cyclist in Malaysia history having won the most competition and the Asian Games.

He started cycling at the age of 15. It all started when he accepted a challenge to race with his elder brother friend, their neighbour. He lost the race but after a week of training, he won the next race. From that day onwards, he train cycling daily and within a year, he was a national cyclist representing Malaysia.
